Obituary

Donald T. Summers, Sr. of Carlisle, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at his home. He was born on December 30, 1932, in Mt. Union, a son of the late William Frank Summers, Sr. and Grace P. (Jones) Summers.

Donald graduated in 1951 from Mt. Union High School and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Donald was a 1959 graduate of Shippensburg University. Mr. Summers graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master's Degree in Elementary Education. He served more than 40 years in education, teaching at many of the schools in south-central Pennsylvania. Among those schools were Mt. Union, Rock Hill Furnace, Shade Gap, Big Spring, and his last 27 years were spent at Bermudian Springs elementary and middle schools. Donald had a deep concern for people and always desired to serve others. He volunteered extensively at the Salvation Army, co-led Bible Study groups, worked and supported the C.A.R.E.S. program, served on the South Middleton School Board for 8 years, participated in events with the Senior citizens in Carlisle, and was an active member of Carlisle Alliance Church.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Jane A. (Steninger) Summers, his children; Rev. Daniel S. Summers and wife, Linda of York Springs, Donald T. Summers, Jr. and wife, Denise of Mount Airy, MD, Kathleen G. Murtoff and husband, Gary of Carlisle, and Joel C. Summers and wife, Nannette of Carlisle, one brother, John H. Summers Sr. of New Oxford and 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, William F. Summers and one sister, Jane Summers Chiodi.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in the Carlisle Alliance Church, 237 E. North St., Carlisle, with Pastor Tim Keller and Pastor Daniel Summers officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle and on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the missions department at the Carlisle Alliance Church.
