Obituary

Donald Ray Brehm, 82, of Carlisle, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2015 in West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg. The son of the late William R. and Evelyn (Morrow) Brehm, he was born on July 7, 1933 in Carlisle.

Don graduated from Carlisle High School in 1951, served in the US Army during the Korean War and earned his Bachelor's degree in Education from Shippensburg State College in 1957. His 30-year teaching career began at Boiling Springs High School where he taught history before moving to the Carlisle Area School District's Intermediate High School where he taught biology for many years.

Don was first and foremost a horseman and was a charter member of the Keystone Harness Horseman Assoc., a Past President of the Red Rose Horse & Pony Club, a former board member of the PA Harness Assoc. and a former starter official of the United States Trotting Assoc. Current memberships include the Carriage Assoc. of America, PA Morgan Horse Assoc., America Horseshow Assoc., Brandywine Valley Driving Assoc., Potomac River Driving Assoc., Rose Hill Museum Driving Society, and The American Driving Society. He also served board memberships with the Big Spring Watershed Assoc., the Cumberland Valley Rails to Trails, Newville Baseball, and was a Past President of the Carlisle Area Education Association and Past President of the Plainfield Lions Club. In addition, he loved history and was a member of the Cumberland County Historical Society.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara (Adams) Brehm, two daughters; Wendy (husband, Rulon) Wetherill of Trappe, PA and Lisa (husband, Samuel) Yinger of Newville, two brothers; Vance W. Brehm of Bend, OR and Dennis D. Brehm of Carlisle, one granddaughter, Anna Kate (husband, Taylor) McCarney, one great-grandson, Benjamin James McCarney and several nieces and nephews and their children.

A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2016 followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St, Carlisle, with Rev. Randall L. Zook officiating. Fellowship will follow the service at the Carlisle Country Club. Memorial contributions may be made to The Cumberland County Historical Society, The Craighead House Committee, Boiling Springs or to Best Dawg Rescue of Bethesda, MD.
