David C. Runkle, 86, formerly of Shiremanstown, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Chapel Pointe Carlisle.  He was born on November 15, 1937, in Sunbury, and was a son of the late Kemer Runkle and Maude (Sitler) Runkle.

David graduated from Middleburg High School in 1955.  He served in the United States Force from 1956 to 1960.  David retired from the PA Department of Corrections in Camp Hill where he was a warehouse superintendent.  He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Shiremanstown.  David was a member of the Shiremanstown Fire Co., the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing and was the founding Sergeant of the Cumberland Guard (a Civil War living history unit in Mechanicsburg).  Friends will remember him for his interest in military history, motor racing, hunting, and model railroading.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy L. (Bickhart) Runkle of Carlisle, two sons, David K. (wife Gretchen) Runkle of Carlisle and Mark A. (wife Lori) Runkle of Anchorage, Alaska, three grandchildren, Adam Runkle of Carlisle, Amanda Neff of Eagle River, Alaska and Kyle Runkle of Eagle River and one great-grandson William Runkle of Carlisle.  He was preceded in death by one brother Kemer Runkle and one sister Vonnie Brown.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 8, 2024, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 44 West Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Peace Church Cemetery with military honors following the service.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church.  www.EwingBrothers.com.
