CW4 (Ret) Richard E. Myers, US Army, 86, of Carlisle, passed to eternal life on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at the M. S. Hershey Medical Center. He was born on April 9, 1928, in Taneytown, MD, a son of the late Joseph L. and Mary Ellen (Cotilus) Myers. He was married to the late Ruth A. (Farmer) Myers, who died in 1984.
Dick was a retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was a two tour veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Richard earned numerous honors and medals, which included the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Star Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Senior Army Aviator Badge Air Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Richard was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and offered all support to the maintenance of helicopters. He retired June 1, 1972 after more than 20 years of service. After retiring from the Army, Richard worked for the United States Army War College as a cook for more than 10 years. Dick was always passionate about cooking. He was a faithful and active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carlisle, where he was a former Eucharistic Minister, usher, custodian of the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery and served on the Collection Committee. Dick was an integral part of assisting the priest and the parish of St. Patrick Catholic Church for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by one brother, William Myers of Baltimore, MD and several nieces and nephews.
A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2014, followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Dr., Carlisle. Rev. William C. Forrey will celebrate the Mass. Interment with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, North Middleton Twp. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 152 E. Pomfret Str., Carlisle, PA 17013.
