Obituary

Colonel (Ret) James F. Dunn, Jr., US Army, 85, passed away April 4, 2018. The elder of two sons of James Franklyn Dunn and Virginia (Campbell) Dunn of Middletown, CT. Upon graduation from Middletown High School, he enlisted in the Army while attending Bryant College in Providence, RI. While at Bryant, he met his future wife, Maryann Daszewski, of Forest Hills, NY. After their graduation and his completion of basic training, they married. In 1953, he graduated from the Infantry Officer Candidate Course at Ft. Benning, GA. His initial assignment was as a Parachute Infantry Platoon Leader in Germany. While in this assignment, he was transferred to the Ordnance Corps and selected to lead the 10th Ordnance Company. Over a 31year career, he continued to hold positions of increasing responsibility including command of the 703d Maintenance Battalion in Germany, the 801st Maintenance Battalion in Vietnam, the International Logistics Center, New Cumberland Army Depot and the 46th Support Group, COSCOM, XVIIIth Airborne Corps, Ft Bragg, NC as well as assignments at the Pentagon, EUCOM in France and Germany, and a tour in Korea. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was inducted into the Infantry Hall of Fame.

COL Dunn concluded his career at the Army War College as the Director of Materiel Systems in the Department of Management. He then began a 15 year career with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and held a number of management and advisory positions until his second retirement in the late 90's.

The Dunns built a home and established roots in Carlisle. A selfless husband and loving father, COL Dunn masterfully balanced his professional life and personal responsibilities such that both of the Dunn children were able to graduate from Carlisle High School. He developed life-long relationships with friends, neighbors, and associates. Of particular note were his friendships with golfing buddies with whom he enjoyed much laughter, numerous trips and lots of friendly competition. He was an active member in a number of associations and groups including the 101st Airborne Division Association, MOAA, AUSA, and The Army War College Foundation. He also enjoyed attending Baltimore Ravens' games with his son-in-law.

COL Dunn held a BA from Bryant College, a BS degree in military science from the University of Maryland, a Master's degree in public administration from Shippensburg State College as well as diplomas from US Army Command and General Staff College and the US Army War College.

He is survived by his daughter, Jessica (husband, Philip) DeMarais of Hollywood, MD, with whom he lived at the time of his passing, one son, Major (Ret) Mark J. Dunn, US Army (wife, Chom Suk) Dunn of Martinez, GA and one step-grandson, James Brinkley, and a brother, Philip C. Dunn, of San Francisco, CA.

A viewing will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2018 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. in St. Patrick Shrine Church, 152 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle, PA with Rev. Josh Cavender officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle is in charge of arrangements.
