Obituary

Lloyd B. McCabe, 88, of Newville, PA, loving and devoted husband to Virginia Sullivan, died Sunday, July 11, 2010 in the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA.He was born April 1, 1922, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and was a son of the late Patrick G. and Lucille (Lloyd) McCabe. Lloyd was a veteran of WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War.

Lloyd was father, soldier, doctor, and athlete. He began playing golf as an 8 year old and beat his age as an 87 year old five times. Lloyd was drafted into the Army in 1943 and served as a medic in the Army Air Corps.Following the war he earned his medical degree from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO, and was in private practice in Fond du Lac. Lloyd was recalled to active duty to serve in the Korean War and, while in Korea, served as the battalion surgeon at the Battle of Triangle Hill and as the regimental surgeon at the Battle of Pork Chop Hill and earned the Combat Medical Badge. Following the Korean War, Lloyd had various assignments in the US and Germany. While in Vietnam, he served as the Deputy Commander Military Assistance Command, Vietnam where he advised the Vietnamese medical forces. Following his service in Vietnam, he commanded hospitals at Fort Jackson, West Point and Fort Belvoir. He retired from the Army with over 30 years of service with numerous military awards, including the Combat Medical Badge, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Metal, and WWII Victory Medal. Following his career in the Army, he served as Medical Director for Weirton Steel Corporation.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Carlisle and enjoyed his family and golf. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, brother, Patrick, sister, Charlotte, M. Hotaling and great granddaughter, Olivia Lloyd Mosley. He is survived by his sons, Michael J. McCabe (and his wife, Susan R. Fournier) of Washington D.C., and Brian P. McCabe of Dallas, TX, two daughters, Victoria L. (and her husband, Theodore) Mosley also of Dallas and Elizabeth "Zizi" (and her husband, Stephen) Schirf of Park City, UT, his sister, Kathleen S. Pedi of Beaver Falls, WI, nine grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2010, in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 87 Marsh Dr., Carlisle with Rev. William C. Forrey officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the services on Friday at the McCabe home in Newville. Burial service will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, in the Ft. Myer Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, VA, with interment immediately following in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
