Walter graduated in 1960 from Northern High School, Dillsburg. He served for a combined 38 years with the US Air Force and the Air National Guard and achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Walter earned numerous awards for his service which included; Air Force Achievement Medal, Commendation Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal with 1 device, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with device, Air Force Longevity Service Medal with 7 devices, Humanitarian Service Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with 8 devices, Kuwait Liberation Medal-Kuwait, Kuwait Liberation Medal-Saudi Arabia and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor and 8 devices. Walter served with the 193rd Special Ops PA Air National Guard and retired in 2004. After his retirement, Walt continued his service on a part-time basis at the Indiantown Gap Bombing Range for two years. He was a member of the Newville American Legion and VFW Posts, the Shippensburg American Legion and VFW Posts, the Carlisle AmVets and the Shippensburg Minnequa Social Club. Walt will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the communities he served.
He is survived by one daughter, April L. (and husband, Dorsey) Crisamore of Wellsville, his companion of 22 years, Julie A. Charles, two sisters; Frances Vehstedt of Reisterstown, MD and Mary Ann Lerew of Dillsburg, two grandchildren; Karryn and Alex Crisamore, his companion's daughters; Catrina Beal of Newville and Jacel Galoway of Covington, GA and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Mike Hammer officiating. A viewing will be on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Burial with military honors by the 193rd Special Ops will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
