Clara Schroth Lomady, 93, of Abington, died on June 7, 2014, at Chapel Pointe Retirement Community, Carlisle. She was born on October 5, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Schroth and wife of the late Wendell "Fuzz" Lomady. Clara graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia. She is survived by her children; Susan Lomady Martin and husband Joe of Carlisle, Nancy Lomady Schale and husband Ed of Shippensburg, Frederick Lomady and wife Maureen of Willow Grove and Judith Lomady Schreiber and husband George of Carlisle, sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Clara was an Olympic bronze medalist, participating in both the 1948 London and 1952 Helsinki games on the USA Women's Gymnastics team. She was team captain in both, and her specialty was the balance beam. Clara was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1974, and holds the record for the most AAU titles of any female athlete. Clara was a Girl Scout Leader, enjoyed camping, bird feeding and watching. She worked as a secretary in the Abington School District. Spending summers on Long Beach Island, NJ, was a family favorite. A long standing member of the Reformed Church of Willow Grove, Clara sang in the church choir with her late husband Wendell. She enjoyed volunteering at her church and was actively involved in various outreach endeavors.
Affectionately known as "Momma Lom," Clara was a grandmother to many outside of her natural family. The number one fan of her children and grandchildren, Clara will live on in their hearts and lives.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clara Lomady will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the Reformed Church of Willow Grove, 1500 North Hills Ave., Willow Grove, PA 19090. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, assisted the family with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to her church or to the US Olympic Committee at
