Skeeter retired after 18 years of service with the maintenance department at Cumberland County Prison. He was formerly an independent big-rig truck driver for 23 years, a PA State Constable for 22 years and had worked part-time at Dickinson College in Public Safety. Skeeter was active for 45 years in fire service and was currently a member of Carlisle Fire & Rescue Services and a life member of the Upper Frankford Twp Fire Co. He was a former member of South Middleton Twp. Fire Co., Union Fire Co., Friendship Fire Co., Empire Hook & Ladder Co., St. John's Masonic Lodge, the Harrisburg Consistory and the Zembo Temple. He also served 23 years with the Carlisle Special Fire Police.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 43 years, Portia L. (Lightner) DeLancey, one son, Clair DeLancey, Jr. (and his wife, Steffanie) of Enola, one daughter, Amy DeLancey of Carlisle, one brother, Kenneth DeLancey of Marysville, one grandson, Wyatt DeLancey, one granddaughter, Natasha Gatheridge, one step-brother, Ron Gutschall of York and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Calvin "Skip" Gutschall.
A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. Pastor Gay Irwin will officiate. Viewing will be on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carlisle Fire & Rescue Services, 177 Carlisle Springs Rd., Carlisle, PA 17013.
