Obituary

Charles L. Handshew, 90, of Newville, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2017 at home. He was born on November 9, 1926 in Carlisle, and was a son of the late Robert "Bob" and Ruth (Bound) Handshew.

Charles was a WWII veteran of the US Navy and served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War. He retired from Frog Switch Manufacturing and the Cumberland County Transportation, both of Carlisle. Charles started a country and western band in 1950 and continued thru the early 1980s. His first band was called the "Rainbow Valley Boys" and his second band was called "The Premiers". Charles loved his horses. He and his wife raised and showed Quarter Horses for many years.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Doris M. (Shreffler) Handshew, one daughter, Roxanne (Handshew) Bumbaugh of Newburg, his beloved poodle, Buddy, three grandchildren; Stacy Shank and husband Dean, Troy Scott and wife and Angie Minnich and husband Daryl, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by 2 sisters and 6 brothers.

A visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017 followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 1200 Walnut Bottom Rd., Carlisle, PA 17013. www.Since1853.com .
