Obituary

Carl H. Mateer, 83, of Carlisle, went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 24, 2021, at Stonebridge Health & Rehabilitation Center, Duncannon, Pa. He was born September 14, 1938, in Carlisle, to the late John H. and Thelma P. (Steigleman) Mateer.

Carl served honorably in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958 aboard the Destroyer USS CK Bronson, DD 668, and in the Active Naval Reserves from 1958 to 1962.  Carl had worked many years with Stan's Beverage Distributor in Carlisle, and retired from John F. Walter Excavating Inc. He also owned his own snowplowing business for many years in Carlisle.  He was a life member of The Turnpike Ramblers Motorcycle Club, of which he was president for many years, and the former Cumberland Fire Company and their Fire Police. He was an avid NASCAR fan. He also enjoyed watching college and professional football, The Little League World Series, and his grandsons and great-grandsons play baseball, soccer, and basketball. Carl also enjoyed riding motorcycles, deep sea fishing, and taking his family on numerous vacations to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware.

Carl is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Alice V. (Torrence) Mateer, two daughters, Sharon Keebaugh of Newville, and Denise Bowermaster of Carlisle; three half-brothers, Harry and his wife Joanne Day of Trinity, Fl., George and his wife Darlis Mateer of New Cumberland, Keith and his wife Pamela of Etters, a half-sister, Debora and her husband Jack of Newport News, Va., and two half-sisters-in-law, Bernadette Mateer of Etters, and Pamela Mateer of New Cumberland.  He is also survived by two grandsons, Shawn and his wife Michaele Keebaugh of Newville, and Eric and his wife Kristina Keebaugh of Newville, and a granddaughter, Nicole and her husband Danny Rouner of Newville; five great-grandchildren, Cameron Keebaugh, Jeremiah and Christian Boullianne, Zoe and Eli Keebaugh, and Fhennyx Rouner.  Carl was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Mateer; four half-brothers, Harold Day, Lynn Mateer, John Mateer, and Dale Mateer; and a son-in-law, David Keebaugh.
