Obituary

Carl J. "CJ" Hurley, 73, of Newville, passed to eternal life on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Green Ridge Village, Newville. He was born on April 4, 1941, in Carlisle, a son of the late Edward Isaac Hurley and Mabel M. (Zinn) Hurley Mell.

He was a 1959 graduate of Big Spring High School, Newville. Carl served four years in the National Guard and two years in the U. S. Army. He began work with the former United Telephone Co., which later became Sprint Telephone Co., and retired as an engineer after 32 years of service. Carl also loved farming. He enjoyed old tractors and fixing things up. He was a member of Carlisle Evangelical Free Church and the Cushman Club of America.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of nearly 55 years, Beverly Ann (Reid) Hurley, one daughter, Tracey E. (husband, John) Rush of Carlisle, one son, Trent A. (wife, Terrylee) Hurley of Newville, one sister, Leona Kelley of Carlisle, three grandchildren; Ashley (husband, Nathan) Payne, Lauren Hurley and Libby Hurley, one great-granddaughter, Brynleigh Payne and many nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by two brothers; Richard Hurley and Paul Wyrick and one sister, Helen Hopple.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 1 p.m. in the Carlisle Evangelical Free Church, 290 Petersburg Rd., Carlisle, with Pastor Shad Baker officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held at the church on Monday from 11 a.m. until time of services. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contribution may be made to Carlisle Evangelical Free Church.
