Bruce C. Long, 87, of Carlisle, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2016 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 16, 1928 in Carlisle and was the son of the late Mervin F. and Ruth (Raudabaugh) Long.
Bruce was a 1946 graduate of Carlisle High School and served in the US Navy during WWII. He attended Penn State for two years and graduated from the former Carlisle Commercial College. He was a sales representative for funeral supplies for nearly 40 years with Superior International Corp. and later for Advertising Sales Co., and formerly worked for Dun & Bradstreet for 15 years. Bruce was currently a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church and was a very active lifetime member of the former First United Methodist Church, Carlisle, where he served in many capacities including; a former President of the Board of Trustees, Ushers Association and the longtime Cubmaster of Pack #160. Bruce was former longtime member, past President and Board of Directors member of the Carlisle Fish & Game Association. Currently Bruce is a member of the Yellow Breeches Anglers Assoc., the Ruffed Grouse Society and the American Legion Post 101, Carlisle.
He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Grace (Shambaugh) Long, two sons; Bruce C. (wife, Linda) Long II and Lt Col (Ret) J. Charles "Chuck" (wife, Jill) Long, USAF, both of Carlisle, two daughters; Melissa L. (husband, Phillip) St. Cyr of New Cumberland and Tracy A. (husband, Jeffrey) Horgan of Carlisle, one sister, Kathryn L. Smith of Carlisle, one brother-in-law, C. F. Shambaugh of Venice, FL, four grandchildren; Jill, Emily, Megan and DeForest and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 25, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 S. West St., Carlisle, with Rev. Jim VanZandt and Rev. Mira Hewlett officiating. Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Viewings will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle and at the church on Friday from 12:00 noon until time of the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Carlisle United Methodist Church.
