Betty F. Spencer, 91, died peacefully on Saturday evening October 6th, 2018, at the Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Carlisle, PA. "Babe" was the daughter of George Yates Field and Winnie Davis Peets. Born on May 15th, 1927, in Wesson, Mississippi, Babe was pre-deceased by her first husband and father of her three children, John Charles Watkins (d. 1966) and by her second husband, Donald Eugene Spencer (d. 1995).
Babe graduated from Copiah-Lincoln Jr. College in Wesson, MS, in 1946. On May 12, 1946, she married John Charles Watkins of Crystal Springs, MS. They had three sons: John Charles Watkins, Jr. (d. 2012), Glenn Yates Watkins, and Bruce Field Watkins. After graduation, Babe worked as a legal secretary for many years and later entered the Federal Government workforce, retiring as a GS-13 Loan Officer with the Small Business Administration.
In May of 1973, Babe married Donald Eugene Spencer and together they resided in Statesville, NC, and then in later years, Las Vegas, NV, until Don's death. Babe then moved to Grand Prairie, TX, to be with her eldest son, John, and his wife, Jenny. Upon John's death, Babe moved to Carlisle, PA, to be with her youngest son, Bruce.
Babe was a person full of life and loved being a homemaker. A loving, giving woman who staunchly supported her family and her children, she enjoyed hearing of the goings on of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Babe is survived by her two sons, Glenn Watkins of Cumming, GA, and Bruce Watkins of Boiling Springs, PA, her five grandchildren, and her six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 10th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, St. John's Episcopal Church, located at 1A North Hanover Street (On the Square), Carlisle, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to "Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center" and sent to c/o Bruce Watkins, 2 Mulberry Court, Boiling Springs, PA, 17007.
