Obituary

Petty Officer First Class (Retired) Phillip R. Myers, US Navy, 78, of Carlisle, passed away on August 9, 2017 at the M. S. Hershey Medical Center from injuries sustained in an accident. He was born on January 28, 1939 in Carlisle, and was a son of the late Raphael Arthur Myers and Helen Mae (Topper) Myers. He was married to the late Shirley J. (Hurley) Myers, who passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011.

Mr. Myers began his 40 years of government service by enlisting in the US Marine Corps in 1956. After serving two years, he was honorably discharged and shortly thereafter began his US Naval career which spanned 18 years of active service and 10 years of service in the Navy Reserve. During his years in the Reserve, Phil worked and retired from the New Cumberland Army Depot in 1996. He was a life member of the Mt. Holly Springs V.F.W. Post 7343 where he was a Past Senior Vice-Commander. Phil was also a member and a Past Service Office of the South Mountain American Legion Post 674.

He is survived by his devoted daughter, Tina M. (and her husband, Brett) Miller of Dillsburg, two sisters; Pat Leedom of Newville and Charlotte Schlusser of Carlisle Springs, two grandchildren; Elijah Miller and Jeremiah Wilson and several nieces and nephews. He predeceased by one step-son, Paul Wilson, Jr.

Funeral services to celebrate Phillip's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 44 W. Main St., Shiremanstown, Pa 17011 with Pastors Sarah M. Keilholtz and Michael L. Seifried officiating. Fellowship will immediately follow the services at the church and burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard. A viewing will be on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the church.
