Bertha Carrie Shannon (Hollenbaugh), who has lived at the Thornwald Home in Carlisle for almost five years, closed the final chapter of her life and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 5, 2016. Bertha was born on June 28, 1924 in Newville, where she spent her formative years and, as a result, Newville remained first in her heart throughout her life. She was the daughter of John and Mary (Watson) Hollenbaugh and was the sixth of their eight children. Bertha was preceded in death by all of her siblings, Mildred Motter (Ross), Cloyd Hollenbaugh (Violet), David Hollenbaugh (Arlean), Pearl Holtry (Eber), Ester Haskins (Russell), Mabel Jumper (Boyd), and Mary Mowers (Glen). She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl K. Shannon, Sr.

Bertha is survived by her son, Carl K. Shannon, Jr. (Marjorie), three daughters; Donna L. Rhoads (Larry), Patsy A. Hoshall (Reed) and Peggy S. Rinehart, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St, Carlisle, with Pastor Harry Madison officiating. Burial will be in Centerville Memorial Park, Newville. Bertha was a long time member of the South Fairview First Church of God.
