First Sergeant (Ret) Wilbur R. Slaughter, Jr., US Army, age 67, of Carlisle, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2011, at his home. He was born on Saturday, November 11, 1944, in New Orleans, LA, the son of the late Wilbur R. Slaughter, Sr. and Caralyn (Ratliff) Slaughter.
Bill was a 1963 graduate of Baton Rouge High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He entered the US Army in 1968 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received many medals and honors for his service to our country. Those honors included the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device, the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with two service stars, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Service Medal with third Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Good Conduct Medal 9th Award. After retiring from the Army in 1993 as a First Sergeant, Bill was employed with the Defense Finance & Accounting Service and the Dunham US Army Clinic at the Carlisle Barracks. He was of Episcopalian faith and was an avid civil war history buff.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Linda A. (Morrison) Slaughter, one son, Daniel Patrick Slaughter (and his wife, Kellie Collins) of Dallas, GA, one daughter, Shelley Taylor Hudson of Redondo Beach, CA and three grandchildren; Myleigh, Melaina and Ryder Slaughter.
Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Arlington National Cemetery. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Suite 300, 4899 Belfort Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32256 or to the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area Inc. 7790 Grayson Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17111.
