Marie K. Poole, 83, of Carlisle, died Sunday, June 7, 2009,
in her home with family by her side. She was born on Feb. 21, 1926, in Cinderford, Glos., England, and was a daughter of the
late George P. and Blanche (Hopson) Matthews. Marie was the widow of Francis C. Poole, who died in 1995.
Marie graduated from high school in England and came to America
in 1946. She lived in Vermont for nine years and then moved to Pennsylvania in 1955 to be near her sister, Margaret. She was
a bartender by profession, working at the Avenue House in St. Johnsbury, VT; the Carlisle Elks Lodge and retired after many
years of service with the former Excellent Inn in Harrisburg. Marie was affectionately known to her grandchildren as "GG"
and to her children as one of the "M&M Sisters" She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles, boating and playing Scrabble.
Marie was of Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by one brother, George Matthews and one son-in-law, Jennings "Frank"
Cox, who died Feb. 21, 2008.
Marie is survived by four daughters; Ann M. Cox of Carlisle,
Linda J. (and her husband, Duane) Dietz of Elliottsburg, Patricia M. (and her husband, Gary) Raymond of Carlisle and Marguirite
K. (and her husband, Bryne) Murphy of Mt. Holly Springs, two sons; David L. Poole of Carlisle and Dwayne C. (and his wife,
Mary) Poole also of Carlisle, one brother; Harold Matthews of Cinderford, England, two sisters; Margaret E. Fishel of Mechanicsburg
and Janet Dymond of Pontradyfen, Wales, two sisters-in-law; Myrtle Matthews of Cinderford, England and Dorothy Cassady of
Lyndonville, VT, two brothers-in-law; John Poole of Lyndonville, VT and Phillip Poole of Florida, her grandchildren; Scott
and Matthew Cox, Christopher Dietz, Megan Langdon, Brijin Bowermaster, Gail DeAngelo, Jeremy Murphy, David Darr, Jr., Todd
Poole, MacKenzie Poole, Wendy Rawls, Joshua Poole and Scott Martyn, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at
4 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle with Pastor Terry Albright officiating. Burial will
be at the convenience of the family in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. A visitation will be held Thursday from
3:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A celebration of life get together will be held for those wanting to celebrate Marie’s
life at the Empire Friendship Fire Co., 177 Spring Rd., Carlisle immediately following the memorial service. Memorials can
be made to Hospice of Central PA, P.O. Box 266, Enola, PA 17025.
